Building a modern, native application for Windows: Which UI framework should you choose?

Microsoft Orleans is a cross-platform framework from the Microsoft Research team that helps you to build robust and scalable distributed cloud-native applications. Orleans has been around for many years and is battle-tested by a number of internal Microsoft products and teams.
In this code-heavy session, Johnny will explain what the Orleans framework is all about: What is the distributed virtual actor model? What are grains? What are silos? I will also dive a bit deeper into the more advanced Orleans features like heterogeneous silos, streams, transactions, etc.

Cache Me If You Can: Supercharging .NET APIs with Caching

You build it, run it and own it. Knowing how your application behaves is easy in your development environment, because you have better debugging capabilities there. It gets more complicated when you run in production. Getting feedback from your application and learning its behavior is essential to close the DevOps feedback loop.

As a consultant, I get to see many systems built by many different developers. Recently, I’ve seen an uptick in the number of systems built with a microservice architecture in mind, but those systems often include a lot of the same mistakes that keep them from working well. 

In this session you’ll learn from my experiences and get pointers on what to avoid in your microservices implementations so that you don’t accidentally build something which has all the worst aspects of a monolithic application and the worst aspects of microservices These monsters are what I call “distributed monoliths”, and I can help you avoid building one accidentally.

Bias is nothing new. Studies have shown pull requests can be judged differently based on the gender of the submitter, resumes filtered unfairly by race or gender. Authors have historically adopted pen names to avoid discrimination. LLMs have been trained on this biased information.

Can the information your LLM knows about you, or what you tell it, significantly impact its results? Could it affect how quickly you arrive at solutions for coding tasks? You will be shocked at the stark difference: the LLM required twice as many questions to deliver code when I specified a different gender.

Regardless of industry trends like microservices or structured monoliths, asynchronous message-driven systems are on the rise. This can be attributed to the ever growing need to break down complex business processes into a series of small steps connected by a reliable communication mechanism, that can be traced back at least to the landmark Sagas paper by Hector Garcia-Molina and Kenneth Salem.

While these systems inevitably grow and evolve, the key challenge of engineers becomes routing of all the messages that glue the business processes together. In this talk I'll attempt to outline some of the biggest and most common issues and suggest common patterns of dealing with them.

Finally we'll discuss a model for thinking about asynchronous message-driven systems that allows you to make sense of all the routing complexity stemming not only from the business itself but also from all the cruft that you, the architect, have to deal with, such as multiple hosting environments, legacy message brokers, rapidly changing requirements etc.
