In this workshop, we will explore the basics of Information Architecture (IA) and its role in creating effective intranets and digital workplace experiences using Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Viva Connections. Level 100-200. SPFx is now a mature Framework for building solutions for Office 365, Microsoft Teams and the newest product, Microsoft Viva. 

This workshop will cover how to get started in SPFx by configuring a very flexible development environment and creating our first SPFx solution. 

We will then expand our sample solution to interact with data in SharePoint. Our solution will use the latest development acceleration tools from the Microsoft-led Patterns and Practices (PnP) community effort to build modern solutions in webparts, extensions, and adaptive cards for SharePoint Teams and Viva.

Level 100. The SharePoint Framework (SPFx) is now the established future for modern, client-side development in the Microsoft ecosystem. SPFx is used for SharePoint webparts and extensions, Teams apps, Adaptive Card Extensions (ACEs) and Microsoft Viva. 

The first step in SPFx development is understanding the model and building the appropriate development environment. 

We will cover these topics, configure a flexible developer environment and then build, debug, and deploy our first SPFx webpart.

For years client-side development in SharePoint was accomplished with jQuery and JavaScript. 

In the last year the development landscape has changed. With the introduction of the SharePoint Framework, SharePoint developers were introduced to new ways of developing. With this new paradigm we need to refresh our skills. 

React is a library that integrates really well with SharePoint, whether you are currently using the SharePoint Framework or you are prepping your code for the future.

React for the SharePoint and Microsoft 365 Developer

Users are spending more and more time using Teams. It makes sense to try and reduce the friction of context switching by bringing our custom applications directly into Teams where they are working. We are able to harness the collaborative nature of Teams and SharePoint in one application and render it in many different contexts. 

In this introductory developer session we will look at how to create and deploy a SharePoint Framework WebPart and have it be usable in Teams. We will use one code base to make the web part Teams aware in both a Teams Tab and a Personal App. We will look at how to use that app to read and write data into SharePoint using PnPjs.

Users will leave with an understanding of how to leverage SPFx to create applications they can use in Teams and resources on how to explore this further. 

Code Once Use Everywhere - Using SPFx to create applications that work in Teams & SharePoint

In SharePoint classic, we could edit list forms using SharePoint Designer or through the SharePoint user interface and content editor web parts. As we transitioned into modern, there were little to no options to enhance the user experience for List and Library forms. 

Now we can use out of the box list forms with custom JSON formatting, create PowerApp list forms, and most recently, create SPFx custom lists forms. 

In this session we will see examples of each approach, discuss pros and cons, and review additional resources for each option. You will leave with an understanding of the different approaches for list form customizations and what to use when based on your needs.

Level 200. The Microsoft 365 development space is continuing change at a rapid pace, including SharePoint web parts & extensions, Teams apps, MS Graph, PowerShell and so much more. One of the challenges of this rapid pace is that API and Framework versions are constantly being updated, so working on projects written against previous versions means a scramble to keep multiple environments available.

Containers allow developers to include the environment configuration in the project files, ensuring the environment is correct for the project. These containers can be used as part of GitHub Codespaces, Docker Desktop, and more.

Level 200. SPFx can be used to build beautiful, modern solutions for Office 365, Microsoft Teams and Viva, but the usefulness of these solutions is limited if not connected to live data.

We will cover how to connect to SharePoint and Microsoft Graph directly using the REST APIs for each data source. 

We will then explore how to use PnPJs and the Microsoft Graph toolkit (MGT) to simplify and accelerate both the development and performance of our SPFx solutions.

Connecting SharePoint Framework (SPFx) projects to your data

Managing tasks in context supports fast collaboration within teams but introduces the challenge of centralized oversight across all tasks for a project manager. Creating a project roll up used to be a time-consuming process with enterprise-level tools like MS Project or integration with other 3rd party applications. 

Now with Microsoft 365, you can combine tools to automate this process and create an integrated dashboard for project manager or executive visibility while still supporting individual project management in context of where people are working. 

In this session we will explore the use case of decentralized task management with a centralized roll-up of tasks for a project manager. We will be leveraging Site Templates, Site Scripts, Power Automate, and the PnP Modern Search Web Parts. We will create projects sites, connect sites to a hub and leverage search to centralize the tasks. 

At the end of this session, you will have an understanding of how to use different tools in the M365 suite to create you own task management dashboard with little to no code.
